The Diasporist was founded in 2024 to connect conversations happening within Germany to those across the globe, creating space for informed debate, new perspectives, and challenging conversations.

We are committed to translating not just words, but ideas—between languages, (sub)cultures, and viewpoints. By publishing original content in both English and German, we amplify voices from diasporic communities, foster dialogue across divides, and introduce new ideas on topics that matter.

Stosslüften [ˈʃtɔsˌlyːftn̩] The German custom of opening windows briefly to let fresh air circulate, even in the depths of winter. Literally translates to “shock ventilation.”

Our content spans literary essays, reviews, reportage, fiction, photo essays, and political analysis. From dissecting the rise of the far right to representing the conversations happening within Germany’s diasporic communities, we approach our subjects with curiosity and complexity in style as well as substance.

Whether you’re based in Germany or elsewhere, The Diasporist invites you to engage in nuanced, challenging conversations that transcend borders—geographical, linguistic, and ideological.

Diaspora Alliance

The Diasporist is a project incubated and fiscally sponsored by Diaspora Alliance, an international advocacy organization that works to strengthen the values of pluralistic democracy by confronting antisemitism and its instrumentalization. Diaspora Alliance sponsors research, educational initiatives, community and network building, and legal and political strategy, while fostering informed discourse.

Editorial Independence

The Diasporist is committed to editorial independence. This means:

Editorial Control. We retain full control over our content, ensuring a strict separation between journalism and potential financial contributions. Donors are explicitly informed that their contributions do not grant editorial input, preferential treatment, or immunity from scrutiny.

Funding. We do not accept donations from political parties, government entities, or sources that could compromise our editorial independence. This policy extends across all our platforms, including texts, events, podcasts, and multidisciplinary content.

Accuracy. We verify and fact-check information to the best of our capacities, prioritize original sources, and correct errors promptly and transparently. Anonymity is granted to sources only when necessary and after verifying their credibility. We make sure our texts provide necessary context whenever possible.

Ethical Methods. Our work is driven by a commitment to justice and human rights, everywhere. We protect our sources and handle sensitive topics, especially those involving trauma victims, with special care. In reporting contexts, we give the people and organizations we write about the opportunity to respond to criticism and allegations before publishing.

Independence. We do not publish paid advertising. We do not endorse political candidates, accept favors, or simply provide a platform for social movements. We disclose affiliations that help provide context for commentators’ positions.
