Celebrating Historic Losers

Last Thursday, the Diasporist celebrated our launch party at bUm in front of a packed house. Emily Dische-Becker was the host for the evening, which took the form of a late-night talk show with the title “Historic Losers: How to Survive and Thrive in Germany in the 21st Century.” Over the course of the night, Emily spoke with Basma al-Sharif, Alena Jabarine, and Ben Miller, with musical performances by Achan Malonda, including renditions of Marlene Dietrich’s “Sag mir, wo die Blumen sind.” “What’s a thing that’s bad, but that’s better when there’s two of it?” Emily asked the audience at the beginning of the show. “Germany.”

Thank you to everyone who bought tickets and donated, and thank you to everyone who came for the show and stayed late into the night. It was wonderful to meet so many of you and to connect with our community.

For those of you who couldn’t make it, we will be releasing selected recordings from the evening. We are also planning future iterations of the talk show, with new guests and topics, at venues to be announced soon.

Additionally, we still have beautiful tote bags for sale, printed by Et al. Press, for 15 EUR (plus shipping). Get yours by sending us an email at [email protected].

If you were not present but would like to make a gift to the Diasporist, you can do so on PayPal. Every euro from our readers makes a difference and allows our magazine to continue.

Thank you again to everyone! And enjoy these images from the night, taken by Raphael Malik.
